Making Connections That Matter

November 20, 2025

As we head toward the finish line of another year and look ahead to the next, I often reflect on the year that is coming to an end. Over this last year, we have seen many new Chief County Assessment Officers taking office across the state, and many first-time township assessors will be entering into office on January 1 for the new four-year term. This next generation of assessment professionals will be faced with many decisions, challenges, and rewards during their tenure in their positions.

This reminds me of when I was newer in the Property Tax realm, trying to absorb every bit of information that I could to learn how to better serve assessors and our taxpayers. What I found then, that still rings true today over a decade later, is the connections you will make with your colleagues and fellow assessment professionals are the real MVPs of navigating this line of work we have chosen.

Being involved with your local organizations will help to forge the connections that will help you as you are starting out, and they will become your trusted advisors as you advance in your career.

For assessors at the county level, attend the County Assessment Officers Association (CAOA) area meetings, Illinois Association of County Officials (IACO) conference, and get involved on committees. The CAOA area meetings are your place to connect with other county assessment officers in your geographical area, so the issues they face are likely similar to those you will encounter. Many industry professionals regularly attend these meetings and provide information.

For township assessors, attend your annual Township Officials of Illinois (TOI) conference and get involved with the Illinois Assessors Association. Several counties or regions have also created their own township assessor organizations where they meet to discuss many assessment-related topics.

For everyone, attending the Illinois Property Assessment Institute (IPAI) Annual State Conference is an excellent time to network and meet others in the profession, both seasoned veterans and people just entering the field. Between the breakout sessions and the social activities that take place, there is ample time to meet others and grow relationships with your peers. The Illinois-IAAO Chapter also provides low-cost educational opportunities and a chance to get to know others in the field.

So, my challenge to everyone in the new year is to get involved, make those valuable connections that you will carry with you over the rest of your career, and attend your local assessment networking meetings and events. Those relationships will become a lifeline and a sounding board for you!
